The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is offering an exciting range of science-themed camps this summer for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. From doing exciting experiments to gaining new science skills, these camps have something for everyone.
This year, we are running three week-long camps and three one-day camps on select Saturdays throughout the summer. Please see camp descriptions for times and prices. Drop-off and pick-up are up to 30 minutes before and after the times listed.
2024 Camp Descriptions
Kindergarten to Grade 1
These camps run for a half day and let children going into Kindergarten and Grade 1 make some amazing discoveries. These camps run from 9:30 am to 12 pm.
The Colours of Science
Discover how colours work in the natural world and in the laboratory! Find out why the sky is blue, see how scientists measure pH with colours, and split ink with chromatography paper as you learn how light and colour work together.
- Date: July 20
- Cost: $18 per participant
Natural Sensors
How do you identify an object, something's temperature, or where a sound is coming from? Join us and discover how humans and animals use their senses to figure out the world around them! Navigate by sound, spot hidden items, and test your taste buds as you learn how your sensors work!
- Dates: August 12 to 16
- Cost: $90 per participant
Grades 2 and 3
These camps are designed for children going into Grades 2 and 3. The camps run from 9:30 am until 3:30 pm.
Around the Moon in Five Days
Join the OSDC Astro-Crew as we plan our mission to the Moon and back! Build bottle rockets, test parachute systems, and use magnets to counteract gravity in a camp that has everything but 'zero gravity'!
- Dates: July 8 to 12
- Cost: $140 per participant
Muscles, Bones, and Blood
Join the OSDC Medical Staff as we learn about how your body works and why blood is the body's energy highway! Build models of joints, flex balloon muscles, and make your own 'blood slime' as you learn what keeps your body running!
- Date: August 10
- Cost: $28 per participant
Grades 4 to 6
These camps are designed for children going into Grades 4, 5, and 6. The camps run from 9:30 am until 3:30 pm.
Structural Supports
The OSDC Construction Crew needs your help! Design and create multistory buildings that can stand up to large amounts of weight, test the crush resistance of domes, and learn what a flying buttress is as you examine different structural shapes and their properties.

Summer Science Olympics
It's time to go for gold! The OSDC Science Science Olympiad will test your knowledge and skills as you design catapults, balance weights, and set off chemical reactions along with lots of other challenges. Come and compete for the title of "OSDC Summer Science Olympics Champion"!
- Dates: July 22 to 26
- Cost: $140 per participant

To register, please complete the registration form and email it to osdc.education@gov.ab.ca. Please note that this is only a registration request. A spot has not been reserved for your child until you have been contacted by the Oil Sands Discovery Centre. Requests will be processed in the order that they are received. Please note that it may take up to one business day to reply to your request.

To register by phone, contact the Centre at 780-743-7167 and leave a message. Email registrations will be processed first, followed by phone registrations. Please note that it may take up to 48 hours to return your phone message. We appreciate your patience.
